FAQs on the capital campaign

What is the budget for the capital campaign?

We need to raise approximately $1,400,000 to make necessary repairs. Of that we will raise $700,000. This goal is based on the results of the fundraising feasibility study in 2022 and we believe the goal is attainable.

Is the capital campaign the same as our annual end of year campaign?

The capital campaign is not the same as our annual campaign. Annual contributions typically come from an individual’s regular monthly income.

Pledges to the capital campaign will be used to fund specific one-time projects. This gift is an extraordinary gift that would likely be above and beyond one’s annual gift. Individuals can give in a variety of ways and all gifts are needed for the campaign to be successful.

How long do I have to make my pledge?

We are asking that pledges be completed in three years.

What is the timeline for the capital campaign?

We will be soliciting advanced gifts through the summer and anticipate soliciting smaller community gifts in fall 2023. We would like to complete the campaign in the winter of 2023. Stay tuned for case statement materials.

Who is leading the campaign?

Campaign co-chairs are Joan Ellis and Mieke Vandersall. Leadership for other positions (advanced gifts, community gifts, communication, events) are currently being recruited.

Have we applied for grants?

Grants, both from public and private sources, have been researched. Most foundations do not grant funding to capital projects. Foundations are similar to other donors: a strong relationship is key to a positive result. Foundations might be interested in the future for select programming opportunities, but these gifts would not include capital work. As such, there may be a family foundation connected to members that may give on behalf of that dojo member. If you are connected to anyone who might be of help, please let us know.

What about corporations?

We also researched corporate funding programs, in particular those of Japanese corporations. Similar to foundations, corporate gifts come after a relationship has been established and built over time. Relationships are indeed the foundation and key to this kind of funding. If anyone has any leads to corporations who might be interested, please let us know.
